Why I’ve launched A Highland Blend to work with Caithness businesses

In 2017 I flitted north from Inverness to Wick in Caithness, and in 2018 I rebranded my blog to A Highland Blend. Since living in Caithness, I’ve got to know the locals and their businesses, got involved with the local community, and started to explore this stunning region, which sits right on the NC500. I’ve […]

Getting out and about: 3 Day Trip Walks in East Caithness

This post rounds up 3 of my favourite leisurely walks on the east coast of Caithness and was originally written when we were in the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic. These walks could be combined to create your own day trip itinerary. The first walk I'm sharing is one that I've enjoyed in all seasons […]

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage – Wick | #ad

This post is an advertised post. I received two nights of complimentary accommodation in exchange for an impartial review of the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage. There's a definite rise in people looking for unique self-catering accommodation for their holidays, whether that's by way of dramatic location, timeless features of the property, or proximity to experiencing life […]

Off the Beaten Track – Dunnet Forest

One of our regular go-to spots in the county of Caithness is the sprawling Dunnet Beach, which is also very close to a favourite puffin spotting site at Dunnet Head. There's also the famous Dunnet Bay Distillery which sports Rock Rose Gin as its flagship spirit, but there's also a spot which we only visited […]

Off the Beaten Track – Latheronwheel Fairy Glen

An earlier visit in the year to Latheronwheel Harbour revealed signs towards Latheronwheel Strath. Until we set foot on this beautiful glen, we didn't realise the incredible work that local volunteers do in creating and maintaining the magical Latheronwheel fairy glen, which you can find next to the woodland burn which runs down into the […]

Latheronwheel Harbour | Off the Beaten Track

I've written previously about a trip to Lybster Harbour, which has taken a star turn recently in featuring as a filming location for The Crown. However, the East Coast of Caithness is jam-packed with more harbours, and after we visited Laidhay Croft Museum, we chose a beautiful day to visit Latheronwheel Harbour.

Laidhay Croft Museum | Stepping back in time

Situated on the A99 between Dunbeath and Wick in Caithness, it's impossible to miss a striking thatched longhouse. It's worth taking a stop at Laidhay Croft Museum!
